Paris Peace Agreement On Cambodia

As Johan Galtung, a Norwegian professor of peace and conflict research and founder of the Oslo Peace Research Institute, says peace should be associated with freedom, equality, justice, pluralism and dynamism. This is something Cambodia has never accomplished completely since the conclusion of the Paris peace agreement 28 years ago. The Paris peace agreement will soon be a forgotten story for the younger generations in Cambodia. Pablo Kang, Australia`s ambassador to Cambodia, today posted a video on his Twitter account in which he expressed his country`s commitment to supporting the principles of the agreements that led to the end of the war in Cambodia and the first post-Cold War peace mission, the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). Professor Subedi commented on the two decades since the agreements were signed and noted that peace and stability had brought “enormous dividends” to the country. When the last convoy left, the prospects for peace and national reconciliation became real. Four parties to the conflict – the State of Cambodia (SOC) led by Prime Minister Hun Sen, The Khmer People`s National Liberation Front (KPNLF) led by Son Sann, FUNCINPEC under the leadership of Prince Norodom Rannariddh and khieu Samphan`s Khmer Rouge finally met in Paris and signed an agreement for “a comprehensive political settlement of the Cambodian conflict,” known as the , 1991. The statement accused the government of Mr. Hun`s Cambodian People`s Party (CPP) of violating the terms of the Paris Agreements and the Cambodian constitution that it helped shape by allowing the Chinese military from Cambodian soil. In July 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported that the two countries had signed a secret agreement allowing China access to the Ream naval base in the Gulf of Thailand. Similar suspicions are also linked to a major tourism development supported by China, higher up the coast. The Cambodian government has strenuously denied these reports. After the Khmer Rouge`s final reintegration into Cambodian society in early 1999, Cambodia`s chronic civil war officially ended.
